This publication contains volumes sixteen and seventeen of the Future of Industry in Europe series. Volume sixteen contains a comparison of the construction industries of Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland. The report summaries the specific characteristics and problems of the construction industry. Some are related to the product and the technological and organisational structure while others deal with the environment of the industry. Volume seventeen contains a report on the chemical industry which is one of the few industrial sectors where European firms have a strong, even dominant position in the world market. Some basic facts are presented on the evolution of the chemical industry. The main sectoral characteristics and global trends and strategies are then developed. The report contains three chapters: (i) the move towards dynamic flexibility; (ii) new materials - evolution and European strategies; (iii) the pharmaceutical industry.
