This publication contains volumes twenty-one and twenty-two of the Future of Industry in Europe series. It develops an analytical and comparative approach to local networks, identifying three major types: the renewal of old industrial districts, the restructuring of big firms, and the emergence of local networks of technological research and innovation. Volume twenty-two is a study of the spatial influence on industrial development in the Emilia-Romagna region. The topics covered are: global characteristics of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, structural problems of industrial development, industrial relations as a regional development factor, the policy aspect, and local and regional policy towards small and medium-sized enterprises.
