Abstract

This report is concerned with a feasibility study for a series of European Regional Innovation Surveys (ERIS) under the European Innovation Monitoring System (EIMS) initiative of SPRINT. The aim of the feasibility study was to define a methodology for ERIS and to construct and refine tools to be used in the surveys. The surveys involve both industrial local units and units within the regions that provide support to industry for innovation activity. The key recommendations arising from the pilot studies that will optimise the operation of ERIS include the use of professional translation in the production of the questionnaire schedules, the exercising of central control over the sampling methodologies and the production of the questionnaires, and the allocation of sufficient resources, both to enable large samples of local units to be surveyed, and to allow sufficient time for the surveys to be conducted fully.
