The main objective of this study is to assess the long-term prospects for renewable energy technologies in the member states of the European Union and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The study investigates and reports on: (i) current technical performance of the various technologies; (ii) costs of existing technologies at current prices; (iii) prospects for technological development; (iv) foreseeable reductions in costs as a result of technical progress and mass production; (v) the technical and economic potential of each technology; (vi) the possible penetration of these technologies up to 2010; (vii) constraints on further penetration.
