Abstract

The Second European Stratospheric Arctic and Mid-latitude Experiment (SESAME) builds upon experience gained during EASOE, a study of ozone depletion in the polar regions in 1991/2. This report discusses the scientific background (the activation of stratospheric chlorine in the presence or absence of polar stratospheric clouds), the international regulatory background, and the results of EASOE. It then sets out the objectives of the SESAME experiment, and describes the instrumentation to be used (ground-based or on ozonesondes, research balloons and aircraft) and the information available from other sources.
