  • STEP leather project : Evaluation of the correlation between natural and artificial ageing of vegetable tanned leather and determination of parameters for standardization of an artificial ageing method

The STEP leather project has performed a detailed study of leather and its deterioration in the context of the protection and conservation of the European cultural heritage. It investigated the changes which occur in leather due to atmospheric pollutants and other environmental factors. It was also concerned with the development of an artificial ageing method to produce similar changes, and the establishment of standard tests to measure the resistance of leather to the ageing process. Particular attention was given to the influence of collagen sequence and structure, and oxidative and hydrolytic breakdown mechanisms.
