Abstract

The coastal zone plays a major role in global cycles and climatic change, while it covers only a small area of the world's ocean. ELOISE (European Land-Ocean Interaction Studies) aims at developing a coherent European research programme of high scientific value and relevance to human society. It will generate predictions for the coastal and shelf environment under different scenarios of global change. These predictions are necessary to provide a sound scientific basis for European policies anticipating effects of global change. It will also improve Europe's scientific and technological capacity in coastal research. ELOISE will help in conserving marine habitats, predicting and preventing effects of pollution, promoting sustainable use of coastal resources, protecting against future sea level rise, and in socio-economic assessment of effects of global change on coastal seas.
