The European Laboratory Without Walls (ELWW) is a network, funded by the EU Biotechnology programme, which brings together laboratories with common interests. This publication covers the area of mucosal vaccine development. The rationale for mucosal vaccines is that secretory antibodies on the mucosal surfaces may inhibit attachment of bacteria to epithelial cells and neutralise a broad spectrum of viruses that otherwise infect epithelial cells and cause disease. This publication contains information on six projects currently being researched by the ELWW.
