Abstract

The present study describes the role of the scientific community within innovation systems from different perspectives: the institutional organisation of R&D systems by the example of selected European countries, the knowledge transfer from non-industrial research institutes to industry, the role of science within models and theories of the innovation process, and the role of scientific institutions within national systems of innovation. The study shows that the relation between research and the scientific community is embedded in complex multidimensional structures wherein the scope of traditional dissemination instruments is too narrow. There is a strong need for a new integrated concept of dissemination of RTD results. This concept contains not only the main elements of RTD dissemination processes, but also integrates Interfaces II and III in a holistic approach. This study has identified the main determinants and elaborated the basic elements of this concept and the necessary instruments.
