In this paper we describe the design of a retarding field analyser (RFA) probe and the special requirements for ion energy analysis in the Joint European Torus (JET) boundary plasma. The first results are presented, together with the simulations by the DIVIMP code using the measurements of the Langmuir probes at the divertor target plates as input for an onion skin plasma model, which is incorporated in DIVIMP to calculate the background plasma.
