Abstract

The report seeks to outline a model of collective Thomson scattering (CTS) which includes many of the recent developments, which is valid for most ranges of interest in present and next step machines and which has been implemented in codes and proven to be an effective tool for predicting performance and analysing CTS data. The model presented here does not accommodate scattering from propagating waves with damping lengths larger than the linear dimensions of the plasma, considered by PILIYA ET AL (1995), nor is it accurate for scattering at the electron cyclotron resonance and its lowest harmonics. First the model is outlined indicating its physics basis. Then methods for analysing the diagnostic potential and optimizing data analysis are developed and finally methods for estimating system requirements are given.
