CCR ELSA laboratory in cultural assets' service : numerical enquiries on a lime-kiln in Ispra
The Safety Technology Institute of the European Commission, Joint Research Centre boasts a long tradition of studies concerning safety structures' problems, both through experimental tests and numerical simulations. Since 1992, the Safety Technology Institute has had at its own disposal the ELSA laboratory, which has characteristics unique throughout Europe for tests on building and structure models, both in enlarged and actual scale. The most relevant feature of ELSA is a 16 metre high reaction wall conceived to resist forces of several hundred tons to be applied to the structure by the use of electro-hydraulic jacks.
