From the present 165000 tons of accumulated spent fuel 65000 tons have been reprocessed. From the separated plutonium 108 tons are in excess, because the present rate of mixed Pu/U oxide (MOX) fuel fabrication consumes only 2-7 tons of plutonium annually. In addition, there exists approximately 200 tons of weapon plutonium which will be dismantled at a rate of 7 tons per annum. The amount of spent fuel will grow annually by 10000 tons per annum of which about 5000 tons per annum of which about 5000 tons per annum are reprocessed producing 40 tons per annum of plutonium. These figures illustrates the enormous investment that will be needed to establish a worldwide partitioning and transmutation management.
