Abstract

Melox is a modern, large pressurised water reactor (PWR) mixed Pu/U oxide fuel (MOX) fabrication facility located in Marcoule, France. Melox has a nominal nuclear material throughput of 115 tons of heavy metal per year. Its nominal fabrication capacity is approximately 250 PWR fuel assemblies per year.

This paper describes the Safeguards Scheme put in place by the Euratom Safeguards Directorate (ESD) in Melox, as well as the organization of the relationship between the Melox operator and ESD, in both the project definition ad implementation phases of the Safeguards scheme.
