Abstract

COST ACTION 97 concentrated on salmonella and campylobacter as the first target organisms, and from a consumer prevention point of view public health aspects were to be emphasized, too. The management committee established the following four working groups:
prevention of infection of live birds used for meat and egg production;
prevention of contamination of poultry meat, eggs and egg products;
application of new methods for end-product decontamination and preservation;
development of monitoring procedures, rapid detection methods and techniques. The first workshop of COST 97 has taken place. Papers, published here, were presented on colonization control, testing and vaccination procedures, competitive exclusion products, diagnosis of infection, bacterial factors, strategies for control, serotypes, clonal evolution of serovars, immunological topics, experimental study on inactivated vaccine, the role of the International Office of Epizootics in the prevention of poultry diseases, environmental aspects of control, the influence of premartal stress on endogenic contamination, prevention and control in live animals.
