This publication represents the proceedings of the fifth STRIDE conference. (Science and Technology for Regional Innovation and Development in Europe). It opens with an introduction: Managing Science and Technology in the Regions - a challenge for European cohesion. Part 1 follows with opening speeches to the conference: Directorate General for Regional Policy; Directorate General for Science, Research and Development; improving the technological culture of small and medium sized enterprises (SME): lessons and limits of the STRIDE Programme in Wallonia; the role of the university in the technological development of the regions. Part 2 covers evaluating regional RTD initiatives lessons from STRIDE. Part 3 reports on thematic workshops on: a global perspective on regional RTD policy; managing RTD firms; inter-regional cooperation in science and technology; developing human resources for science and technology in the regions. Part 4 concludes with European options for supporting technological innovation in the regions.
