The general objectives of the research reported in this publication are: to develop appropriate protocols for diagnosis, treatment and follow up of radiation-induced childhood thyroid cancer in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS); to train CIS medical specialists and technicians in the management of childhood thyroid cancer and other radiation-induced thyroid diseases; to develop new technologies for the assessment and management of thyroid cancer and related disorders; to standardize laboratory diagnostic and monitoring procedures; to evaluate the features and the outcome of the post-Chernobyl radiation-induced thyroid carcinoma as compared with the differentiated thyroid carcinoma observed in children living in unexposed areas in Western Europe; to evluate the effectivness of iodine supplementation and thyroid suppressive therapy as a secondary measure in the prevention of radiation-imduced thyroid cancer.
