A study has been made of the stability of ballooning modes in large aspect-ratio tokamaks with circular cross-section. These modes are sensitive to local pressure gradient and any variation of the magnetic field curvature may induce an magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability when the pressure gradient exceeds a critical threshold.

In this report a necessary and sufficient condition is established for ballooning mode stability in the large aspect-ratio approximation (R/a for less than 1). This criterion is applied first to obtain Troyon formula, and to compute the beta limits of two classes of performant equilibria exhibiting higher values than predicted by Troyon scaling.
