Abstract

To gain more knowledge about the optimum configuration of Photovoltaic (PV) hybrid building components, the Joint Research Centre, Institute for System Engineering and Informatics (JRC-ISEI) has performed pilot research. Modelling and experimental work has been carried out for the assessment of the energy efficiency of PV device integration on building facades. Overall 30 chimneys on the European Laboratory for Structural Assessment (ELSA) building on the JRC Ispra site have been fitted with 770 m{2} of amorphous silicon (a-Si) modules, giving a rated power output of about 30 kW. Aspects such as winter heating, summer cooling electrical performance, the improved heat loss coefficient of the component and the thermal recovery from the ventilated air in the cavity between the PV device and wall are being investigated.
