Abstract

The behaviour of the molten flux flowing through the gap billet-mould has been investigated. The molten flux residue collected at the mould outlet is suitable for chemical interchange studies in the flux-steel system. With the aim of identifying the most appropriate steel composition to perform mould longitudinal cutting tests, the flux residue (RIM) remaining adhered to the mould at the end of the cast has been studied for different steel compositions and using different kind of powders. One of the main aims of this project was to know the molten flux layer thickness all around the transverse perimeter of the billet. With this aim in mind a procedure based on the following items has been used: stop the strand, transverse cutting of the billet under the mould, mould extraction with billet end inside, longitudinal cutting of the mould.
