Abstract

The programme of this convention consisted in designing, building and experimenting with a twin-roll continuous casting installation at the semi-industrial scale for producing steel strip, which was to have the following features : a high output, of the order of 100 t/hour; a strip width of more than 600 mm; it should have been possible to produced strip on this machine with variable widths. Three years of investigations carried out on the hot model in Maizières have led to the following conclusions : the twin-roll continuous casting process is capable of further development into an industrial stage for the production of strip of ordinary stainless steel, provided that a cold rolling step and an annealing step are maintained afterwards; it appears like a good idea to continue the development of this process at a semi-industrial scale. The scale that ought to be chosen for this extrapolation is that of a piece of equipment which would ressemble a completly industrial installation, both as far as the design dimensions and the price are concerned.
