The nitrogen cycle in still water : The case of Lake Orta
Lake Orta, after 70 years of pollution, is on its way to recovery owing to the liming carried out in 1989. The pH, which reached a low of about 4 units, is coming back up towards neutrality. Nitrification and denitrification have restarted and large amounts of nitrogen are leaving the lake. This is due to microbial populations which are able to participate in the nitrogen cycle, and which are going to colonize the ecosystem of Lake Orta. The waters of the lake should, in few years, come back to favourable conditions for the development of new food chains, broken far back in 1926.
