Abstract

Depth-sensing indentation measurements were performed with 2 different Vickers indentors and one Berkovich indentor. Sample materials were mirror polished Ag, Al, Au, Ni and Ti. From the load - penetration depth data the convectional hardness plots as well as the first derivative were calculated. The latter procedure yields a specific volume related density of deformation energy in the probed material. That specific energy density is shown to be constant material parameter for extended penetration depth and for different Vickers indentors. Vickers and Berkovich indentors delivered within the error margin the same results.
