Abstract

A monitoring system of the thermal state of the meniscos has been made by the installation of thermocouples on ILVA/TERNI continuous casting moulds. The system allows the quantification of the lubricating behaviour of the casting powders and the identification of the optimal lubrication conditions to give the best quality of stainless steel. The link between the chemical and physical characteristics of the casting powder, the thermal state of the meniscos and the conditions and infiltration of the lubricating film are shown. The positive effect of the low crystallisation temperature for a regular solid waste stratum, and for an uniform thermal flux, and for the surface quality of the slab is confirmed. Other research is needed to link the results of the thermal monitoring of the meniscos, the lubricant state and the surface quality of the slab, and also to find a forecasting method for the cast quality in real time.
