Abstract

The present report is devoted to new research works carried out in order to analyse the organic and inorganic compounds present on rolled sheets. A washing-off method, using ultrasonic agitation and polar/non polar solvents was set up. This procedure allows total recovery of the oil and the residues present on steel sheets. The Direct Analysis of Triglycerides, Additives and Mineral Oil (DATAM) methodology has been completed by the use of analytical technique devoted to the characterization of degradation products present on steel sheet after rolling and in the annealing. To characterize these compounds three methods were studied : ashing method, acidification and chelating reaction. The characterization of the organic part of the insoluble compounds is carried out by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS). To quantify the mineral fraction oil, extraction, specific methods, dedicated to the analysis of tramp oils present in the emulsion were also developed. The potential of these methods to elucidate the oil thermodegradation during annealing must be pointed out. Some trials show, unexpectedly that, after annealing some rolling oil fingerprint and/or specific compounds remain.
