Abstract

BABEL (Baltic and Bothnian Echoes from the Lithosphere) was a large scale seismic experiment to investigate the crust and lithosphere structure of the Baltic Shield. This experiment proved highly successful, revealing startling new images of the crust and upper mantle which proved to be of critical geological importance in establishing the longevity of plate tectonic mechanisms. The experiment was extended to cover the southern part of the Baltic Sea with the objectives of obtaining detailed information on how sedimentary basin architecture is related to deep crustal structures and how regional tectonic history determines the nature and development of the basins. The study used marine seismic reflection profiling in combination with wide-angle reflection refraction experiments. A second phase of BABEL was undertaken to allow a further analysis and interpretation of the BABEL data across the southern Baltic and to integrate it with other seismic surveys across the region. This report is an overview of this second phase of BABEL together with publications that have resulted from it. At the same time, further research on other aspects of BABEL has continued; the results presented at a workshop held in Moscow in 1994 during the Jubilee meeting of the Commission on Controlled Source Seismology are included.
