Abstract

The main objective of the study is the evaluation of the radiological consequences of the geological disposal of spent fuel in the Boom clay at Mol. This report presents inventories of the spent fuel that can be expected from the Belgian nuclear programme. Possible disposal scenarios are drawn up and existing repository concepts are adapted to allow for the disposal of the spent fuel assemblies. The limitations on the repository concept resulting from the heat output of the spent fuel are also evaluated. The methodology that will be applied in this study is explained. Also included is a literature study on the behaviour of spent fuel in repository conditions, and information for the case of disposal in clay. The models and computer codes that will be used are discussed, including the need for development of a new code for the solution of the coupled near field and clay migration models. The results of the deterministic and the stochastic calculations are given. Recommendations are formulated for possible research and development programmes and for future performance studies on the disposal of spent fuel in clay layers.
