Abstract

Measurements carried out on a CO(2) sample prepared by mixing known amounts of natural CO(2) with CO(2) enriched in carbon-13 and, to a lesser extent, in oxygen-17 and oxygen-18, revealed that the mixture was not in isotopic equilibrium. This occurs for samples of any gas containing more than one isotopically exchangeable atom in the molecule, prepared by mixing gases with different isotopic composition. After isotopic equilibration was achieved by means of platinum powder as a catalyst, the CO(2) mixture showed isotope abundance ratios in agreement with the statistical distribution of the isotopic species, as they can be computed from the isotopic composition of the parent CO(2) samples.
