Indicator bacteria, including coliforms and faecal streptococci, may become stressed or injured in waters. These injured bacteria are incapable of growth and colony formation under standard conditions because of structural or metabolic damage. So, suitable analytical methods to detect injured microorganisms in water samples are needed to avoid serious risks for human health. The Standard Methods suggest some specific procedures to enhance resuscitation of stressed or injured microorganisms. These problems are discussed in the present work.
