Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (RTD) of the European Union aims at strengthening the scientific and technological bases of Community industry and encouraging it to become more competitive at international level. In parallel with specific programmes the Commission has encouraged leading researches to organize high level meetings on advanced research issues of European significance. A number of these meetings were held in the fields of physics and chemistry of nanometric molecular systems. This report oulines the scientific scope of research activities in these fields, summarizes contributions to different meetings and presents some perspectives based on an overall analysis. Activities include advanced research on practially all forms of nanomolecular systems, covering the solid state of matter (microelectronics, supraconductivity, nano-technologies, surface and interface technologies, molecular materials) as well as the "soft state" of condensed matter: the state in which moleucles and macromolecular polymers interact with and via a liquid solvent (liquid crystals, molecular biotechnologies, protein engineering, gene technologies, advanced pharmaceutical technologies).
