In the study reported in this publication a series of tests have been performed to evaluate the tribological properties of Zircaloy 2. They were compared to the properties of Zircaloy 2 covered by a laser of zirconium nitride obtained by a thermal treatment in a nitrogen atmosphere. The most appropriate nitrided layers were obtained by a treatment of 850 C for 100 hours in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The tribological tests were performed in a pin on disk apparatus at room temperature in air or nitrogen. A clear wear improvement was obtained when the tests were performed in humid air (around 50% relative humidity). In dry air on the contrary the wear rate was higher for the nitrided samples than for bare Zircaloy 2. The friction coefficient was, irrespective of the atmosphere, higher for the nitrided surfaces.
