Results of Workshop on Benzo-a-pyrene Analysis in Creosote
A workshop on benzo-a-pyrene (BaP) analysis in creosote was held in Ispra in October 1995 in order to resolve problems arsing during previous collaborative trials. These trials were carried out to evaluate a method for benzo-a-pyrene anlaysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in creosote foreseen as a CEN (European Committee for standardization) standard (ENV 1014-3). The evaluation revealed a relatively high reproducibility value (about 50%). The cause of problems during the CEN TC 38/WG 12 meetings (Creosote) were not identified, therefore participants in this workshop were the technicians involved in the collaborative trials. After discussions about the conditions applied during the former collaborative trials the participants performed some laboratory work in order to investigate the influence of the use of different standards on the results of BaP analysis. It was found that not all participants followed strictly the rules which are given in the ENV 1014-3 CEN standard. Statistical evaluation has shown little difference between the results of the participants using different BaP standards. Additional instructions were elaborated within this workshop in order to make sure that every participant in the next collaborative trial follows the rules more strictly.
