This manual provides an introduction to the European Commission Host Organization (ECHO) Host and the Common Command Language. It is intended to help users who are new to the system as well as those who have experience of data communications and database searching. It does not represent an exhaustive reference on the Common Command Language. Part 1 outlines the services available from ECHO and explains the facilities offered by the basic system commands. Part 2 describes the procedure for accessing ECHO. Part 3 describes the main features of the ECHO host. It explains how to select a database, use the help files, and it introduces the basic elements of searching. It also provides an introduction to masking, truncation, adjacency, the use of profiles, the electronic messaging facility and the ORDER command. Part 4 describes the Common Command Language used by the ECHO host. Part 5 deals with common problems and means of overcoming them. Part 6 is a glossary of terms. Part 7 is a quick reference guide. It covers the Common Command Language, communications parameters, and provides a brief functional reference. This manual relates to Version 4.0 of the Common Command Language used by the ECHO host computer.
