Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This publication is authored by Tecnomare SpA and IT Power Ltd as a summary of the Resource and Technology Assessment carried out under the research project Tidal and Marine Currents Energy Exploitation (CENEX) within the JOULE II programme. The study examines the resource, technology and economics relating to the possible exploitation of offshore tidal and marine currents as a future source of energy. The exploitation of marine currents is a new development, which is only now starting to be considered as a realistic energy supply option due to recent improvements in offshore engineering technology. This study has identified 106 European locations with strong marine current resources, and has estimated that these could supply 48 TWh per year to Europe's grid network (equivalent to 12500 MW of installed capacity at the expected capacity factors) even if using only existing know-how with conventional technologies. Although this resource appears to have major potential as a renewable energy resource, it has so far been neglected as an area of research.
