Abstract

The objective of the research work was the systematic investigation and optimization of flow conditions in pusher-type and walking-beam furnaces with the currently usual burner arrangement. The aimed improvement of energy utilization was to be achieved especially by an appropriate adjustment of the oxygen profile in the furnace chamber as well as by a uniform heating of the product. For the systematic investigation of the large volume flow in the furnace chamber and for the determination of adequate measuring points for the combustion gas analysis in production plants, physical cold models have been tested for seven selected pusher-type and walking-beam furnaces. The effect of flow pattern, air factor and furnace coverage on energy consumption and temperature distribution has been calculated. In this way it was possible to evaluate the efficiency of measures for the improvement of temperature uniformity. Measurements in operation were made to check the model results. The total calculated energy saving potential amounted to about 7%. Important aids for the optimization of rolling mill furnaces have been developed and made available with the tested measuring techniques and the proposed method of evaluation.
