This document considers 3 aspects of advances in engine technology:

tip clearance effects in advanced axial flow compressors - the research involved experiments and theoretical modelling. A database was also built up after a literature study. This was used to validate the theoretical model.

low emission combustor technology - 5 tasks were reviewed:
definition of combustor conditions for future aero engines;
assessment of pollution levels using present technology;
summary of pollution reduction methods;
fundamental investigations;
selection of pollution reduction methods.

investigation of the wake mixing process behind transonic turbine inlet guide varies with trailing edge coolant flow ejection - 4 tasks were addressed:
aero design of an advanced transonic trailing edge cooled turbine blade with 2 different trailing edge configurations;
detailed testing of both blade configurations in a straight cold flow suction type cascade facility;
testing of the blade with ejection from a slot on the pressure side in a compression tube annular cascade facility;
calculation of the cascade flow fields with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes Codes adapted specifically for handling blades with coolant flow ejection. flow ejection.
