Abstract

The 3 electrode furnace in operation at Société Métallurgique de l'Escaut was the first industrial sized one using direct current. This configuration makes the three electric arcs convergent. This phenomenon creates a hot spot in the centre of the furnace. This inconvenience is taken advantage of, by continuous charing of scraps through a hole in the middle of the roof. It is possible because of the large pitch circle of graphite electrodes. Furthermore, due to the decrease of stresses on the roof, the following advantages are possible to:
gain in production because of the decrease of tap to tap time;
gain in energy because of the decrease of thermic losses;
gain in refractories (the life of roof refractories was increased);
decrease of fumes emission when charging. ng.
