This paper reports the results of a study evaluating the life of the single crystal nickel-base superalloy SRR99 under thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) loading, in the uncoated condition as well as protected with a nickel aluminide diffusion coating and with a CoNiCrAlY overlay coating. Both coatings cause the TMF life of SRR99 to decrease, in particular under out-of-phase TMF cycling. The reduction by a factor of 5 is largest in the case of the overlay coating.
Porosity in the CoNiCrAlY coating and the martensitic transformation of the NiAl coating are responsible for the high crack number densities observed in the coated SRR99.
