Abstract

Different surface treatments on Ti6A14V alloy were studied in order to minimize the wear rate of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Pin on flat wear tests and other surface characterization tests were carried out.
Tests showed good wear resistance of UHMWPE against Ti6A14V bearing surface coated with ZrN or TiN by physical vapour deposition (PVD). With these surface treatments it is possible to increase Ti6Al4V surface quality and resistance and consequently significantly decrease wear rate of UHMWPE with respect to untreated Ti6A14V.
