The protonation equilibria of nitroanilines (B), used as indicators in concentrated aqueous acid solutions CF(3)SO(3)H(+)H(2)O, and in solid acid materials, CF(3)SO(3)H(+)SiO(2), were analysed. Titration curves and basicity constants pK(BH)(+), of 2,4-diCl-6-nitroaniline are reported. It is shown that analogues pK(BH)(+) values can be obtained for an indicator in both systems, when the activity coefficient functions, able to describe the variation of the activity coefficient of reagents and products in the acid system under investigation, are used. It is found that the amount of acid required for the protanation process of an indicator in liquid and in solid differs by a factor of between 10{-5} and 10{-4} ca.
