  • Simultaneous measurements of aerosols in the free troposphere and marine boundary layer : evidence for a dominant free tropospheric source of MBL CN AND CCN

Measurements of the submicron aerosol size distribution were performed simultaneously at two sites on Tenerife, one in the marine boundary layer (MBL), the other in the free troposphere (FT). MBL distributions are bimodal FT distributions are unimodal but their integrated number concentrations are similar at about 500 cm{-3} STP. From these data statements are derived about new particle production within the MBL, removal of aerosol particles from the MBL and entrainment of FT aerosols into the MBL. The observations support the idea that entrainment and not in situ particle production is the major source of particles, including CCN, in the unperturbed subtropical MBL.
