Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are indispensable in order to calibrate and verify complex measurement processes applied to the analysis of pharmaceutical products and their metabolites. An overview of existing pharmaceutical BCR-CRMs and the materials in the pipeline is given. Projects for the preparation of new BCR-CRMs should be initialized in agreement with the European Pharmacopoeia. The administrative procedure to apply for funding of the European Commission for the production of new materials via the Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) Programme is described. The principles of the SMT approach for the preparation of BCR-CRMs according to the Guidelines for the Production and Certification of BCR Reference Materials (Doc. BCR/48/93) and the role of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) with regard to reference materials is summarized.
