Abstract

The understanding of transient fuel behaviour under incidental as well as accidental conditions is a key issue in the safety analysis of existing or planned nuclear power plants. In addition, hypothetical severe accidents need to be investigated to assess the consequences on the reactor containment integrity and the corresponding potential source terms, taking into account in some circumstances mitigating measures to evaluate the adequacy. In order to get the best expertise in this field, the Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire is conducting, within a wide international collaboration frame, important safety programme in 3 In-pile experimental facilities located on the Cadarache centre, France : CABRI, SCARABEE (both being grouped in the SURA facility) and PHEBUS.
