Analysis methods and modelling techniques for monumental structures are discussed. In particular, a review of the nonlinear models is made. Aspects such as identification of model parameters, monotonic and cyclic behaviours, as well as tension and compression behaviours, are discussed. Furthermore, the results are presented of preliminary nonlinear numerical analyses, aiming at the definition of the experimental model to be tested in the reaction wall facility of the European laboratory for structural assessment (ELSA). The performance of alternative solutions for the experimental model, based on the number of arches, ranging from one to four, are analysed and it is concluded that a test specimen with three columns represents the optimum solution.
