Analysis of the Structure of Layers on UO2 Leached in H2O
A brief description is given on nuclear techniques (Rutherford backscattering/channeling, resonance scattering and elastic recoil detection analysis using energetic He-ions) to analyse surfaces of leached UO(2) single crystals. The kinetics of the growth of layers of higher oxides, their thickness and the water content can be measured nondestructively. The above techniques are used to analyse the structure of layers of U(3)O(7) on UO(2) leached in demineralized water at temperatures up to 200 C and to define the lattice mismatch between the bulk UO(2) and the transformed layer.
