Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Union aims at strengthening the scientific and technological bases of Community industry and encouraging it to become more competitive at international level. The five year Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (1994 - 98) is implemented through a limited number of specific programmes each covering a well defined area of research and development. Areas include Information Technologies, and Industrial and Material Technologies, Energy and Environmental Technologies and the fast expanding field of Bio- and Medical Sciences. The Commission has encouraged the initiative of leading researchers in the Union to organize high level meetings on advanced research issues of European significance. Such meetings generally deal with frontier research subjects, underlying modern industrial development and future technological skills. A number of these meetings were held in the emerging high technology field of molecular biology. The Commission has recognized the mounting importance of this field by allocating to biosciences and life sciences research a larger part of its Framework Programme funds which increased from 3% to 13% over the past decade. The present report outlines the scientific scope of advanced research activities in this field, summarizes contributions to several high level meetings, workshops and conferences and presents some perspectives based on an overall analysis.
