Research and Rural Regions : The contribution made by research and technological development in the rural and island regionsFunded under: FP4-FAIR, REG-ERDF-INNOVATION C, REG-LEADER 2
This publication follows on from a study carried out for the European Commission in 1994 by the Dynmed network in order to coordinate research and technological development policy with regional policy. The study describes more than 50 local development experiments (in either rural or island regions) in which research and technological development (R&TD) played a major part in France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Denmark. From these experiments the author has drawn conclusions and, above all, recommendations that were useful to all those involved in economic development. This publication is intended for those who are professionally concerned by the countryside and the islands, those who are working for the development of those regions within the interface structures and the local authorities, and those who bear responsibility for economic development at national level. Only the main results of the study are set out here. They have been highlighted by some of the most significant instances. The economic data for the countries and regions concerned, and the relevant analyses, may be found in the final report of the Dynmed study and in the reference publications.
