Abstract

Lake Monate is a small water body not far from Varese, placed in a reduced catchment basin. Waters are characterized by a good hygienic quality and normally suitable for bathing. In 1990 a programme to control the Lake began, organized by the Consorzio Intercomunale Salvaguardia e Tutela of the lake itself. the work described here emphasizes the results of the microbiological determinations carried out on water samples collected in the last six years. The analytical data show an increasing improvement in water quality, in relation to the installation of sewer systems. Only Streptococcus faecalis, in the last four years, have increased considerably. The reason is the reappearance of avicolous fauna which disappeared years ago.
