Corrosion of ferritic and austenitic stainless steels in cycled oxidising-reducing gas atmospheres
Heat exchanger tubes in many present-day power plants are frequently exposed to atmospheres which cycle between oxidising and reducing conditions at elevated temperatures. As S and Cl-containing species are often present, severe corrosive attack of the materials can occur. These investigations focus on establishing the type and the quality of the scale formed during the very initial stages of the reaction and its influence in providing continuing protection to the alloy under the given conditions.
