Abstract

This report is the result of a study on the significance of strain limits for elevated temperature design and provides a basis for the decision on their necessity or usefulness. Existing rules for nuclear as well as non-nuclear design and their backgrounds are reviewed and evaluated critically in the light of current knowledge and experience. The report recommends methodologies for the determination and quantification of strain limits and demonstrates to experts in science and testing of materials how to proceed together with experts in structural mechanics and fracture mechanics, particularly, in order to satisfy the requirements. The main purposes of the report are a revelation of the significance of strain limits and of the effects they depend on, together with a weighing of their importance. Also a presentation of a strategy and methodology of generation of strain limits and, finally, the preparation of the basis for such a work and further studies.
